As John Hugh B. Penton, he was born at Marylebone, London on 8 May 1917, his mother's maiden name was Green. He studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts and in 1939, whilst still a student, Penton won the competition for the exhibition centre-piece at Olympia. An artist and interior designer. He married at Oxford in 1947, Eileen H. Milburn and they moved to Walpole in Suffolk. He died in the Deben district of Suffolk in 2000.
