DICKERSON, Robert

1928 - 2020

Robert Arthur Dickerson was born at Ipswich in 1928, second child of Arthur Ernest Dickerson (6 March 1898-5 November 1976), an innkeeper, and his wife Laura Frances née Mathews (19 July 1903-1969), who married at St Albans, Hertfordshire in 1925. In 1939, Robert was living at the 'Live & Let Live', 357-363 Wherstead Road, Ipswich with his parents and sibling sister Doreen. He was educated at the Northgate School in Ipswich during which time he exhibited, then aged 15, at the Ipswich Art Club in 1944 'The Hunt'. After Northgate he spent a year at the Ipswich School of Art and, with the help of a Queen Victoria Scholarship, in 1950 he moved to Brighton College of Art and Design. After spending several years painting and teaching art overseas, Robert returned to his birth town and set up in Ipswich, exhibiting his watercolours, pastels, graphics, and oils in galleries throughout Suffolk and Norfolk and in 2019 was ‘Artist in Residence’ at the White Lion Hotel in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, painting the atmosphere which permeated the shorelines of Suffolk. He travelled widely with many important commissions and exhibitions in Malta, Cyprus, Rome, Sardinia, Sicily and Venice and his work is in collections throughout the world. Robert Arthur Dickerson died on 19 December 2020.
