LINGWOOD, Horace Jeckell
Horace Jeckell Lingwood was born at Bucklesham, near Ipswich in 1859, elder son of Horace Lingwood (1834-1 January 1920), a manure agent, and his wife Anne née Jeckell (1829-19 November 1821), who married at Norwich in 1858. In 1871, Horace was an 11-year-old, living at Bosmere Mill, Creeting All Saints, near Ipswich with his parents, 37-year-old Horace, born at Battisford, Suffolk and 40-year-old Anne, born at Wymondham, Norfolk and two siblings, Bessie Ellen and Thomas Edward 18. Horace studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art winning certified prizes in 1879 for his geometric, freehand, and model drawing and his work was sent up to South Kensington School of Art. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 1879 and exhibited from Creeting All Saints in 1881, three paintings ‘Smallmouth Cove, Watermouth, near Ilfracombe’, 'Capstone Hill, Ilfracombe' and 'A Study'. In 1881, a 21-year-old brewer, living at Creeting All Saints with his father and two siblings and was still living with them in 1891 when described as ‘engineer’. By 1892 he had moved to Stafford, Staffordshire where he married on 15 July 1892, Katherine Selina, elder daughter of William Henry Dorman and Eliza (Littlewood), of The Hawthorns, Stafford, an engineer who had worked in Sweden. In 1901, Horace was a 41-year-old mechanical engineer, living at 166 North Street, Stafford with his 33-year-old wife Katherine, born in Sweden and their two children, Philip Jeckell 5 and Theodora Joan 1, both born at Stafford, and they had another son Christopher born in 1902. In 1911, a secretary to mechanical engineers, living at 46 Foregate Street, Stafford describing himself as married but with no wife and he states that he had no children, when his wife and children were living with her father William Henry Dorman at 43 Foregate, Stafford. In 1921 Horace was living on his own account at 25 Earl Street, Stafford when his wife was still living with her father but at 44 Truscott Avenue, Winton, Bournemouth, Hampshire. Horace Jeckell Lingwood was of 4 Station Road, Trimley St Mary near Ipswich when he died at the Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital on 19 December 1937, aged 78 and wife Katherine died at 18 Wolverhampton Road, Stafford on 20 July 1945, aged 78.
