JAMES, Francis Victor

1885 - 1957

Francis Victor James was born at Hertford, Hertfordshire on 9 December 1885, son of Thomas James (1855-1928), a life insurance superintendent, and his wife Eliza née Riley (1856-), who married at Ripley, Derbyshire in 1877. In 1897 Francis commenced his education at Ipswich Municipal Secondary School and in 1901, a 15-year-old post office clerk, living at 'Parkholme' Ancaster Road, Ipswich with his parents, 45-year-old James and 45-year-old Eliza, with six siblings Mary Louisa 23, Harvey 21, Ethel Annie 19, all born at Ripley, Bertram Thomas 17, born Nottingham, and Daisy Eliza 13 and Frederick Antonius Morris 11, both born at Hertford. Francis married at Ipswich in 1904, Ethel Garrard (30 August 1883-1953) and in 1911, a 25-year-old 'sorting clerk & telegraphist', living at 69 Berners Street, Ipswich with his 27-year-old wife Ethel and their 6-year-old daughter Ethel Nora, it was the home of his wife's grandfather James Garrard. Francis served in the Royal Engineers during the First World War. In 1939, an overseer at the Post Office, living at 43 St Johns Road, Ipswich with his wife Ethel. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1944, two works 'Old Barn, Rushmere' and 'Evening, Harwich Harbour'. Francis Victor James was of 43 St John's Road, Ipswich when he died at Felixstowe, Suffolk on 10 October 1957.
