LITTLEWOOD, Edward

1836 - 1904

Edward Arthur Littlewood was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk on 29 February 1836, and baptised at St Margaret’s Church on 23 March the same year, son of Marmaduke Foster Littlewood (1806-15 January 1869), a Trinity House pilot, and his wife Elizabeth Salters née London (16 February 1806-25 January 1878), who married at Gorleston with Southtown, then in Suffolk on 21 August 1826. In 1851, Edward was a 15-year-old, living at 14 Village Road, Prospect Place, Kirkley, Lowestoft with his parents and seven siblings, Averill Mitchell 17, Emma 13, Elizabeth 10, Horatio 7, Mary Ann 5 and Malvina 2, all born in Lowestoft. In 1861, a 25-year-old artist, living at 1 Prairie, Lowestoft with his parents, 54-year-old Marmaduke, born at Beighton, Norfolk and 55-year-old Elizabeth, born at Great Yarmouth and four of his siblings, the Littlewood's seems to have had eleven children in all. A landscape and marine artist, in 1865 living at London Road, Lowestoft but by 1869 had moved to 3 Marsham Place, Denmark Street, Lowestoft. Littlewood married at Norwich in 1880, Sarah Susannah Lindsey (1842-1892) and in 1881, an artist landscape painter, living at Nelson Terrace, 4 Dereham Road, Norwich with his 39-year-old wife Sarah, who was born at Lowestoft. In 1881, he exhibited two works at Ipswich Fine Art Club ‘Summer Afternoon’ and 'Cooling Streams'. By 1891 they had moved to the nearby 56 St Giles Street, Norwich now with a four-year-old son Edward Arthur Marmaduke. His wife died the following year 1892, aged 50, and in 1901 Edward and his son, a law student, were boarding at 29 Bristol Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire and where Edward, sen. died in early 1904, aged 67. His son Edward was of Brooklyn, 20 Alhambra Road, Southsea, Hampshire when he died at the Nursing Home, King's Service House, Elm Grove, Southsea on 7 February 1912.
