SEWARD, Prudence

Prudence Eaton Seward was born at Kensington, London on 10 September 1926, daughter of John Pearson Seward (2 May 1897-5 June 1956), a grocer's clerk, and his wife Joan Millicent Eaton (19 March 1898-8 December 1971), youngest daughter of the late William Eaton of Hale, who married at St Peter's Church, Hale, Bucklow, Cheshire on 10 August 1920 and in 1939 were living at 114 Porchester Road, Paddington, London. Prudence was educated at Northwood College, Middlesex and studied at Harrow Art School 1945-1947 under Ernest Heber Thompson (1891-1971) and, with a British Institute Scholarship, at the British School in Rome 1949-1951 under Robert Austin (1895-1973) and she won the 'Prix de Rome' in 1949. Prudence exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1948 and in 1967 was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society and in 1977 a full Member. She worked as a freelance illustrator 1951-1975 and amongst the many books that she illustrated are 'Rumer Godden: Candy Floss' (Macmillan 1955); 'William Mayne: The Man from the North Pole' (Hamilton, 1963) and 'On the Stepping Stones (Hamilton 1963). Like other freelance illustrators, her work was often seen in the 'Radio Times'. She married at Hampstead, London in 1953, Guido Belmonte, sculptor and teacher at Ipswich School of Art, and they had one daughter Emma, born in 1956 but they had separated by 1963 when Prudence married secondly Murray H. Graham but Prudence continued her work under Prudence Seward. She lived at Syleham Hall Lane, Wingfield, Suffolk.
