FORTIN, Philip 'Pif'
Philip John William Fortin was born at Marylebone, London on 30 May 1901, one of the nine children of Phillip John Fortin (17 May 1876-18 February 1933), a tailor's presser, and his wife Ada Helena née Attewell (4 May 1878-1953), who married at Marylebone, London in 1901 and in 1911 they were living at 323 West End Lane, Hampstead, London. Known as 'Pif' he studied at St Martin's School of Art, London 1917-1920, under Harry Parr (1882-1966) and at the Royal College of Art 1920-1923. Philip married at Marylebone in 1922, Jeannette Caroline Constant Georgescue and secondly at Stepney, London in 1936, Yetta Israel (1 June 1911-1976) and had one daughter. A painter, sculptor, wood-engraver, and a lecturer at Ipswich School of Art from 1928 where one of his many pupils was Reginald George Haggar and where he remained until 1962 and retired to France. 'Pif' Fortin exhibited at 19 Group, Zimmer Gallery, London; New Burlington Gallery and the Daily Express Young Artists exhibition. Philip John William Fortin lived at 47 Whitby Road, Ipswich and died at Colchester, Essex in 1985.
