FORTIN, Philip John William

1901 - 1985

Born at Marylebone, London on 30 May 1901, son of Phillip John Fortin (1876-1933), a tailor's presser, and his wife Ada Helena née Attewell, who married at Marylebone in 1901 and in 1911 they were living at 323 West End Lane, Hampstead, London. He studied at St Martin's School of Art, London 1917-1920, under Harry Parr (1882-1966) and the Royal College of Art (1920-1923). Philip married at Marylebone in 1922, Jeannette C Georgescue and secondly at Stepney, London in 1936, Yetta Israel (1901-1976) and had one daughter. A painter, sculptor, wood-engraver and a lecturer at Ipswich School of Art from 1928. He exhibited at 19 Group, Zimmer Gallery, London; New Burlington Gallery and the Daily Express Young Artists exhibition. He lived at 47 Whitby Road, Ipswich and died at Colchester, Essex in 1985.
