LOFTUS, Dorothy
As Ellen Dorothy Reynolds, she was born at Islington, London on 11 April 1875, daughter of Thomas John Reynolds and his wife Ellen Mannall, who married at St Pancras, London in 1864. Ellen Dorothy Reynolds, of Steyne Gardens, Worthing, Sussex, married at Kensington, London in 1909, Pierse Creagh Loftus (29 November 1877-20 January 1956), this marriage is also recorded in 1910 and reported in the St West Sussex Gazette under Dorothy Reynolds, at James's Roman Catholic Church, 22 George Street, Marylebone, London on 30 March 1910, both marriages are noted in the National Registers. In 1911, as Dorothy Loftus, a 30-year-old artist, living at 26 South Green, Southwold, Suffolk with her 33-year-old husband, Creagh, who was born at Goresbridge, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, a brewery manager and part owner of Adnams Southwold brewery, and later M.P. for Lowestoft 1934-1945. As Dorothy Loftus, she exhibited from 26 South Green, Southwold at the London Salon 1913-1914 she was also a member and an exhibitor at the Sole Bay Group. In 1925 Dorothy Loftus held an exhibition of the work of Harry Becker at the Swan Hotel, Southwold and in 1957 their son, Nicholas Loftus (1916-20 December 1963) and wife Prudence (1921-28 December 2001), also championed Becker's talent, mounting a major exhibition in Aldeburgh. Ellen Dorothy Loftus was of Reydon Covert, near Southwold when she died at The Castle, Ruthin, Denbighshire on 30 November 1943, her husband married again, Eileen Elkington, the widow of Brigadier-General Robert James Goodall Elkington (1867-1939) and daughter of Claude Marzetti. Pierse Loftus died at Southwold on 20 January 1956, aged 78.
