Allan Drummond

Allan M. Drummond was born at Halstead, Essex in 1957, son of Duncan John Robertson Drummond (1931-2 July 2011) and his wife Audrey F. S. née Rayment, who married at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk in 1954. On leaving Sir Charles Lucas Comprehensive school, Colchester, Allan became a reporter and sub-editor on the East Anglian Daily Times of Ipswich. He then studied graphic design at the London College of Printing 1980-1983, where his final year tutor was the great poster designer Tom Eckersley (1914-1997) and Allan won a Royal Mail scholarship to study illustration at the Royal College of Art 1983-1986, when Sir Quentin Saxby Blake (born 1932), was the Head of the illustration department, and printmaker Sheila Robinson (1925-1988), Allan's personal tutor, invited him to visit Saffron Walden to spend time with Edward Bawden. A team of architects for London Transport visited the college seeking mural designs for London's biggest subway interchange, Holborn station, Allan set to work, and on the advice of sculpture professor Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2006), he built cardboard model collages to visualise the project. Today thousands of travellers every day enjoy the murals that Allan printed by hand as a student, using enamels silkscreened on steel panels. In 2005, Allan and his family settled in Savannah, Georgia, USA, where he had accepted the position of Chair of Illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design. During his tenure, the department doubled in size, and Allan's own students were regular winners in national and international student competitions. In the USA, Allan continued creating his picture books for Farrar Straus and Giroux in New York. Allan and his family are now back home living in Suffolk, where Allan continues to illustrate, and create picture books in a style that remains fresh, contemporary, and quintessentially English, completing at least a dozen books. He is also Senior Lecturer in Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. He married at Colchester, Essex in 1983, Gaye E. Moore and in 2011 they were living at Cedar House, Flatford Lane, East Bergholt, Suffolk.
