HODGSON, David

1798 - 1864

David Hodgson was born on 13 June 1798 and baptised at St Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth on 19 June 1798, son of Charles Hodgson (1769-1856), an artist and schoolteacher, and his wife Nanny née Ch[r]iswell, who married at North Walsham, Norfolk on 15 May 1796 and about 1798 they moved to Norwich. A pupil of his father and of John Crome (1768-1821), with whom he accompanied on sketching tours. David married at St George at Tombland, Norwich on 5 December 1822, Frances Stone. Young Hodgson built up a teaching practice and became drawing master at Norwich Grammar School. His subjects, both in oil and watercolour, are old houses and lively street scenes in Norwich and Norfolk and he exhibited at Norwich from 1813 and as David Hodgson, jun. at the Royal Academy also showing at Liverpool, Manchester, and Newcastle. At the Suffolk Fine Arts Association held at Ipswich in 1850, he had on show five works, 'Meadow Scene, Trowse near Norwich', 'Lane Scene: Eaton, near Norwich', 'Meadow Scene: Higham near Norwich', 'Nave of Norwich Cathedral, looking East' and 'Water-Gate on the Banks of the Wensum'. David Hodgson died at his home in Prince of Wales Road, Norwich on 23 April 1864 and buried at St George at Tombland, Norwich on 26 April. He left some £5,000 to his children.
