WILLIAMS, George Augustus

1814 - 1901

George Augustus Williams was born at Marylebone, London on 4 May 1814, third son of artist Edward Williams and his wife Ann Hildebrandt (c.1780-1851), who married at St Pancras, London on 12 February 1806, and was a member of the Williams family of painters. His father was a landscape artist who taught George, otherwise he received no formal art instruction. George painted riverscapes of the Thames, moonlit landscapes, seascapes and views of Kent, Wales and elsewhere and his paintings were exhibited at Suffolk Street as well as at the Royal Academy from 1841; the British Institution and elsewhere including at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850, two works 'A Gray Day on the Thames' and 'Medmenham Ferry'. George married at St Pancras Church, London on 19 February 1835, Caroline Smith (1814-1854), and they had five children. George Augustus Williams died at 177 Castelnau [Road], Barnes, Surrey on 26 May 1901, leaving his effects to his unmarried daughter Caroline Fanny.
