LADBROOKE, John Berney

1803 - 1879

John Berney Ladbrooke was born at Norwich on 31 October 1803 and baptised at St John Timberhill, Norwich on 6 November 1803, son of the English painter and printmaker Robert Ladbrooke (c.1768-11 October 1842) and his first wife Mary née Berney (1766-1807), who married at Norwich on 3 October 1793, after the death of his first wife, Robert Ladbrooke married secondly at St Andrews, Norwich on 27 September 1808, Ann née Dorey (c1770-1828), and had further issue including Frederick Ladbrooke. John was taught by his father and then apprenticed to John Crome (1768-1821) and became a significant member of the Norwich School of Artists. Ladbrooke was a successful teacher, numbering John Middleton among his pupils. His oils display a High Victorian attention to detail and bombastic lighting effects, and he is well known for his views of the English landscape. He exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street Gallery until 1873, he also exhibited six works at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 'View in Windsor Forest', 'View near Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire', 'View at Dalham, Norfolk', 'Autumn-Acorn Gardeners', 'A Scene near Cromer, Norfolk' and 'Beach Scene-Shrimp Girl'. He married in 1825, Hannah Mary Swan (1797-1867) and John Berney Ladbrooke died at his home at Kett's Castle Villa, Mousehold, Norwich on 11 July 1879, aged 75, leaving an estate of around £4,000. John Berney Ladbrooke is represented in Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries; Bolton Museum, Lancashire and many others.
