CHEVALLIER, Mary Amelia

1863 - 1921

Mary Amelia Chevallier was born at The Grove, Ipswich in 1863 and baptised at St Helen's Church, Ipswich on 4 August 1863, one of the five children of Barrington Chevallier (27 January 1819-21 August 1889), a physician, and his second wife Mrs Mary Wardell Miles, widow of Joseph Miles and eldest daughter of Matthew Leach of Compton, Islington, who married at St Mary's Islington, London on 25 February 1858, Barrington had married his first wife Ellen Brownsman, second daughter of the late Major Brownsman of 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, at St Mary's Colchester on 29 October 1845 and by whom he had two sons before her death in January 1856, aged 37. In 1871, Mary was a 7-year-old living at The Grove, St Helen's Street, Ipswich with her 52-year-old father Barrington, two siblings Edith Sophia 2 and Claude Lionel 1, and two stepsiblings Charles Temple 18 and Joseph Miles 20 and they retained eight indoor servants. In 1881, her father was house superintendent at Ipswich Asylum where the family were living. Mary studied at the Ipswich School of Science & Art and in 1880, obtained her certificate in freehand drawing and in 1882 matriculated with honours at London University, one of her classmates was Sarah Ellen Mostyn. In 1891, a 27-year-old mistress at Ipswich High School, living at Avenue House, Woodbridge Road, St Margaret's, Ipswich with her widowed mother Mary and sibling brother, 21-year-old Claude, a medical student, but by 1901 she and her mother had moved to 86 Ashdell Road, Sheffield. In 1911, a 47-year-old teacher at Cheltenham Ladies College, living at The Limes, Painswick Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire with her 42-year-old sister Edith Sophia, also a teacher at Cheltenham Ladies College, a niece 19-year-old Rose Chevallier, a student at Cheltenham and a cousin 69-year-old Mary Elizabeth Chevallier Boutell. Mary Amelia Chevallier was of Glebe House, Hollesley, Woodbridge, Suffolk when she died at Timaru, Church Road, Parkstone, Poole, Dorset on 9 February 1921, aged 57, she was unmarried and left her effects to her unmarried sister Edith Sophia.
