MARTIN, Miss Frances Augusta

1846 - 1923

As Frances Augusta Martin, she was born at St Paul's, Kensington in 1846, daughter of Francis Offley Martin, barrister-at-law, and his wife Mary née Smith, who married at Chesterton, Cambridgeshire on 25 January 1844, she was a sister of Edith Philadelphia Martin [q.v.] In 1851, the family were living at Stondon Place, Stondon Massey, Ongar, Essex and ten years later at New Street, Hampton, Surrey. On the death of her father at Kensington in 1878, aged 73, his widow and Frances came to live at The Cottage, The Street, Coddenham, Suffolk. Painter of landscapes in watercolour who lived at Coddenham and at Ipswich. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1890-1891 and exhibited from Coddenham in 1890 'Coddenham Church' and in 1891 from Lanark Lodge, Warrington Road, Ipswich 'Sketches in London', 'Sketches in Essex and Suffolk' and 'Stoke, Ipswich' and others, mostly local scenes but some London views. She married, as his second wife, at Ipswich in 1892 Robert Lindley Nunn [q.v.] and as Mrs Nunn a member of Ipswich Art Club 1893-1905 exhibiting from Westerfield Road, Ipswich in 1893 three watercolours 'St Mary le Tower', 'Old Houses, Coddenham' and 'Christchurch Park', in 1894 some views in Windermere and in 1895 four watercolours 'The Avenue Christ Church', 'Canal at the Hague', 'Early Autumn, Christchurch; and 'Bolton Lane, Ipswich'. Her husband died in 1901 and in 1911 Frances was a 65 year old patient at a private hospital at Eardley House, Sevenoaks, Kent. She died at Wandsworth, London on 7 January 1923, aged 77.
