LUKE, John

1944 - ?

Born in co. Durham on 12 May 1944, son of John James Luke and his wife Dorothy Mavin née Miller who married at Shadforth, Durham on 1 August 1942. John studied at Sunderland College of Art 1960-1964 and design at Sunderland University in 1990. He married at Durham in 1965, June Henderson (1950-2001) and they have a son and a daughter. He taught at Hartlepool College of Art 1964-1980 and was Head of Faculty of Exp. Arts, County Durham School until 2002. He is principally known for his large mining paintings but does private and business commissions both in the U.K. and in Spain. He lives at Pippin Barn West, Folly Lane, Copdock, Ipswich and works between his home and his studio in Spain.
