As Janice Ann Attree, she was born at Melford Priors Avenue, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 23 February 1939, daughter of Charles Frederick Attree (30 April 1914-25 February 1983), dry cleaner & presser, and his wife Lilian Kathleen, née Jebb (10 May 1919-1996), who married at Broadwater Church, Worthing, Sussex on 5 February 1938. Jan, as she was known, was educated at Whitelands College, Putney and studied at University of London Institute of Education and Reigate College of Art. She married in Yorkshire, Peter Smail and has a son and a daughter. As Jan Smail, a painter in oil, pastel and watercolour and has exhibited at Whittlesford Gallery, Cambridge; Castle Gallery, Rothsay, Isle of Bute and Westminster Galleries, London and elsewhere. She latterly worked from 'Woodlands', 24 North Road, Whittlesford, Cambridgeshire.
