SHALDERS, Lucy Mary
Lucy Mary Shalders was born at Saxmundham, Suffolk on 21 May 1863, fourth of the four daughters of Alfred Shalders (1827-9 January 1908) of Southampton, but was born at Worstead, Norfolk, who later kept a draper's shop, Old Waterloo House, on the Cornhill, Ipswich, and his wife Emily Taylor (1825-1902), youngest daughter of James Shepherd Taylor of Fishley Hall, Norfolk, who married at the Baptist Chapel, Worstead, Norfolk on 13 November 1856, Lucy's sisters were Clara Shalders and Emily Shalders]. Lucy, like her sisters was educated at Ipswich High School for Girls and studied at Ipswich School of Science & Art and in 1880 passed out with a certificate of excellence in Model Drawing and in 1882 matriculated with honours at London University, her classmates included Mary Amelia Chevallier and Sarah Ellen Mostyn. In 1881, Lucy was a 17-year-old student, living at 16 Burlington Road, Ipswich with her 54-year-old father Alfred, now a draper trade valuer, his 55-year-old wife Emily and two sibling sisters 22-year-old Clara, a drawing teacher and 20-year-old Emily, an art student drawing teacher. In 1891, a 27-year-old 'retired' high-school teacher, living at 18 Burlington Road, Ipswich with her 65-year-old mother Emily and 32-year-old sibling Clara Jane, a painting & drawing teacher. She then spent some time in China with the Baptist Missionary Society but returned home on the ill-health of her father who died in 1908. In 1911, she was living at 212 Felixstowe Road, Ipswich 'on own means', the home of her 53-year-old widowed sister Fanny Elizabeth Lidstone and Fanny's 17-year-old daughter Elsie May Lidstone, an art student. In 1939, living on own means, at 9 Station Terrace, Trimley St Mary, Felixstowe, Suffolk. Lucy Mary Shalders died at Baylham Hall, near Ipswich on 4 December 1942, she was unmarried.
