Philippa Champain

As Philippa M. Carr, she married at Derby in 1992, John Bateman-Champain and works under the name of Philippa Champain. Philippa works as an art therapist with children and adolescents and joined Sudbourne Printmakers having attended a weekend workshop in woodcut printing. She has continued to explore woodcut with the boldness and simplicity of black and white prints as well as experimenting with different ways of intruding colour, including printing with colour onto a darker background introducing a dark, rather than a white outline. Her inspiration is drawn from nature and our relationship with plants and animals and some of her prints incorporate a sense of narrative. More recent work has included looking through transparent layers towards a darker distance inspired by layers within the landscape transformed into abstract forms. This led to further layered work using screen-printed backgrounds over-printed with collagraph and linocut. Philippa exhibits from Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk with Reydon Open Studios as well as with Sudbourne Park Printmakers.
