BURY ST EDMUND'S ART SOCIETY
Bury St Edmund's Art Society was formed after a successful art exhibition in 1947 with the backing of the Libraries & Museum Committee of the Town Council with the election of chairman Mrs S. J. M. Simpson, hon. secretary H. J. M. Maltby and hon. treasurer C. Edwin Noble and were requesting entries for an exhibition of the Society to be held at School of Art Building, Cornhill, Bury St Edmund's on 28 June-7 July 1948. It held its fourth exhibition of West Suffolk artists at the Town Hall, Cornhill, Bury St Edmund's 26 June-8 July 1950 and in 1952 a new Art Gallery was opened in the School of Art which had formerly been occupied by the Fire Service. It is currently still a lively society, open to artists working in an ever-widening range of media, including painting, in watercolours, oils and acrylics, mixed media, pastels or drawing plus printmaking and sculpture. The Society's membership comprises people from all occupations and includes many for whom art is a pleasurable pastime, as well as several distinguished professional artists. The club has annual exhibitions of members' work.
