James Hutchinson

Originally from Dorset, but now living in Suffolk James studied at the Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London 1995-2004. An art teacher at Ipswich School he is inspired by Cézanne aiming in his paintings and drawings to achieve a balance between looking and observation. In his oil paintings he is using colour more expressively and in his drawings working to observe more profoundly. He feels Picasso looking over his shoulder to check he is working hard enough and to see if he is moving on from Cézanne’s influence. But for the moment he is content to indulge his romantic idea of the artist painting and drawing outside in the landscape. His interest is in the changing seasons, the colours and the sensation of being outside. Most of his time has been spent in woods looking through trees to the sky. Looking through branches makes a fragmented view and he has learnt (from Mondrian) that there is a choice to paint those fragments different colours. Artist in residency at Helmingham Hall Gardens in Suffolk he has had solo exhibitions at Vortex Jazz Bar Gallery, Stoke Newington, London; The Truman Brewery Gallery, Brick Lane, London; The JLV Gallery, Cambridge Heath Road, London; Cello York Street, London; North House Gallery, Manningtree, Essex; The Cross, 'Lots of Little Lines', Woodbridge, Suffolk; Ipswich School Festival of Music, Suffolk; The Galley, Woodbridge, Suffolk and elsewhere with mixed shows in London, Norwich, Ipswich, Aldeburgh, Manningtree and in Tuscany, Italy. Known at 'Hutch' he lives at Melton, Woodbridge, Suffolk.
