Felixstowe Art Group, originally named the Deben Art Group, which was founded in 1952, at Makinsons Framing and Art Shop in High Road West, Felixstowe and had Carl Giles as vice-president until his death in 1995. Miss Joyce Havell, a descendent of the Havells who printed Audubon's Birds of South America, was the first President of the Group and, on Miss Havell's move from Felixstowe, Bob Campbell was elected President in 1956 and held the position until he moved to Canada in July 1968. The Group's first Exhibition was held at the old Ambulance Hall in Orwell Road, Felixstowe in 1955 which consisted of 78 exhibits, mostly unframed watercolours, the 2010 Exhibition totalled some 200+ works with members being limited to a maximum of four paintings. The Annual Exhibition then moved to the Marlborough Hotel, Orwell Road, Felixstowe, when members of the Rangers Art Club, now the Orwell Art Club of Ipswich, were invited to exhibit as guests, a connection which lasted for many years. In 1980 the Deben Art Group changed into the Felixstowe Deben Art Group and in 1986 to Felixstowe Art Group. The aims of the Group are to encourage art in the community, accepting members from complete beginners as well as experienced artists, providing members with the ability to display their work at their Annual Exhibitions as well as at their former Gallery on Bent Hill, Felixstowe. In 2023 the Bent Hill Gallery was closed, and they now exhibit from Suffolk Living, 22 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe.
