STROH-RUBENS, Ursula
As Ursula M. H. Stroh, she was born in Germany in 1938. Ursula married at Chelsea, London in 1961, Maurice Rubens, and is the mother of both Sula Rubens and Zoë Rubens. Ursula, who works as Ursula Ströh Rubens, studied art at Goldsmiths College, specialising in ceramics and etching and gained a postgraduate diploma in ceramics and etching. Part-time lecturer at Goldsmiths' College and, for a short time, at Lowestoft, Suffolk. She travelled extensively in Greece where the evidence of cultural origins and the land, as well as nature and architecture have shaped her visual language. She relates this experience to the forms and structures that develop through the process of building the pot, hus birds, trees, skies, and land emerge out of slips, pigments, and fire. Her work includes hand built ceramic vessels, raku fired or smoked in Western European, African, and Asian traditions. She has exhibited at Kettle's Yard, Cambridge in 1996 and Town Hall Gallery, Ipswich and elsewhere and her work is held in many collections including the Wilfrid Trust, Auckland, New Zealand, The Gateshead Museum, Shipley and Stadt Dortmund, Germany. In 2003 she was living at 18 Anglesea Road, Ipswich.
