OLIVER, Herbert Benjamin

1887 - 1978

Herbert Benjamin Oliver was born at Ipswich on 14 March 1887, son of Benjamin Oliver [q.v.] and his wife Alice Maud née Hupton, who married at Ipswich in 1885. In 1891, a 4 year old living at Cemetery Road, Ipswich with his parents, 30 year old Benjamin, a commercial clerk & portrait painter, and 28 year old Alice Maud, and Benjamin's sister-in-law, 35 year old Caroline Hupton, a tailoress. In 1901, still living at Ipswich but in 1911, a 24 year old lithographic designer, boarding at 37 St Johns Grove, Leeds, the home of 49 year old boarding house keeper Elizabeth Bilbrough. He married at West Ham, Essex in 1921, Ellen Morris (25 November 1885-1977) and they moved to Norwich. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1932 from Heath View, Gertrude Road, Norwich one painting 'Hope, Youth', one in 1933 'Age and Peace' and in 1935 from 7 Branksome Road, Norwich an oil 'Wall Flowers' and a print 'Childhood Wonderland' and in 1937 two oils 'Colchester Town Hall' and 'Rain Storm'. In 1939, they were living at 7 Branksome Road, Norwich when Herbert was a 'commercial artist'. He died at Norwich in 1978.
