WALLACE, Robin

1897 - 1952

Robert Wallace, known as Robin Wallace, was born at Kendal, Westmorland on 17 March 1897, third child and eldest son of Robert Sheldon Wallace (9 July 1854-1941), a carpet weaver, later a gardener, and his wife Agnes Ann née Robinson (1866-1942), who married at Kendal in 1892. In 1901, Robert was a 4-year-old, living at 48 Union Street, Kendal with his parents, 46-year-old Robert and 34-year-old Mary[sic], with two sibling sisters, Sarah Elizabeth 8 and Ruth 6, both born in Kendal and ten years later they had moved to 56 Highgate Yard, Kendal, when Robert was a 14-year-old errand boy, with the addition of three more siblings Winnie 7, Amy 6 and William 1. Robert was educated at Kendal Green School and worked for a local horticulturalist and during the First World War, served in the Royal Marines. In 1921 the family were living at 9 West Cliffe, Kendal with son William and four daughters when Robin was an artist boarding at 39 Norland Square, Kensington. He studied at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art in Camden Street, Kensington until 1926 when he married at Kendal, Marion Jane Everson (18 August 1898-1988). A landscape and still life painter in oil but also in watercolour and was also an etcher. During his studies Robin returned to his birthplace of Kendal, producing several landscapes of the area which he exhibited at The Royal Academy from 1922 and which he included in his first solo exhibition at the Rembrandt Gallery, Liverpool in 1926. A regular exhibitor at The Royal Academy; the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club also in the provinces including the Ipswich Art Club in 1932 from 71 Camden Street, Kensington, London an oil, 'The Old Mill, Woodbridge. At the outbreak of the Second World War he moved to Kern, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire and taught art at Langford Grove Girls School, Gloucestershire before returning to London. Robin Wallace was of 47 Ladbroke Road, Notting Hill Gate, London W11, when he died at St Stephen's Hospital, Fulham, London on 20 July 1952. He signed his works 'Robin Wallace'.
