FITT, Gertrude Caroline

1863 - 1942

As Gertrude Caroline Howes, she was born at Ber Street, Norwich on 26 July 1863, daughter of William Howes (c1824-12 April 1872), a candle manufacturer, and his second wife Caroline Amelia née Campling (1 May 1830-23 November 1907) widow of George Kilbee, who married at St Clement's Church, Norwich on 1 February 1860, William married his first wife Caroline née Purse in 1847. In 1871, Gertrude was a 7-year-old scholar, living at 86 Ber Street, Norwich with her parents, 45-year-old William and 35-year-old Caroline, with stepsibling Lucy 18 and sibling William Frederick 1. Gertrude studied at the Norwich School of Art and married at St John Sepulchre, Norwich on 10 January 1906, Cyril Herbert Christian Fitt (28 February 1867-29 April 1935), a retail chemist. In 1911, a 47-year-old, living at 36 St Stephens Road, Norwich with her 44-year-old husband Cyril, with her 41-year-old brother William Frederick Howes, a veterinary surgeon, and his wife Leah Rose Howes. As Miss[sic] Gertrude C. Fitt, she exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 36 St Stephens Road, Norwich in 1933, a watercolour 'Riverside, Norwich'. In 1939, a widowed artist painter, still living at 36 St Stephens Road, Norwich. Gertrude Caroline Fitt died at the Nursing Home, Brunswick Road, Norwich on 24 September 1942, she had no children.
