THIEME, Anthony

1888 - 1954

Antonius Johannes Thieme was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands on 20 February 1888, son of Karel Thieme (1863-1929) and his wife Alida Cornelia née Lans (3 February 1860-22 August 1922), who married at Rotterdam on 5 August 1885. Anthony studied at the Academie of Fine Arts in Rotterdam for two years and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, Holland, under Georg Hacker (1865-1945) and Antonio Mancini (1856-1930) in Italy and studied in Germany. At the age of 22, he travelled to the United States where he found work as a stage designer at the Century Theatre in New York, and married in Manhattan on 4 March 1915, Alma Fendel. He then went to South America, including Brazil and Argentina, making his livelihood with stage work, followed by work in England, France, and Italy. Returning to the United States with a contract for additional stage work, Thieme found himself in Boston, Mass. but in 1928 abandoned stage work and made his living by his paintings and etchings. He married secondly in 1929, Lillian Beckett (1894-1984) and moved to Rockport, Massachusetts. A landscape and marine painter and established the Thieme School of Art and was a major figure of the Rockport School of American regional art and a contemporary of important Rockport artists such as Aldro Hibbard (1886-1972), Emile Gruppe (1896-1978), William Lester Stevens (1888-1969), Antonio Cirino (1888-1983), and Marguerite Stuber Pierson (1898-1978). He continued his travelling including to Mexico, Guatemala, Florida, and France. A full member of the American Watercolor Society; Art Alliance of America; the Salmagundi Club; the Boston Art Club; North Shore Art Association; Rockport Art Association; New York Water Color Club; Art Alliance of Philadelphia and the National Arts Club and exhibited his work at the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York but also exhibited at the Ipswich Art Society from Summer Studio, Rockport, Mass. in 1933, an oil 'Granite Quarry' which he also exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in the same year. Thieme committed suicide at Greenwich, CT. on 6 December 1954.
