HOSSACK, James Francis Clark
James Francis Clark Hossack was born at Islington, London in 1868, but baptised at St Ethelbert, Hessett, Suffolk on 5 February 1869, only son of James Hossack, formerly a bank manager in Bombay, and his wife Emily Grace Jones (1840-1869), eldest daughter of John Jones of Grosvenor Road, Highbury, London who married at St Mary's Church, Stoke Newington, London on 7 January 1868. James married at Trimley St Martin Church, Suffolk on 7 October 1896, Marie Therese Clarke (20 May 1867-15 March 1947), only daughter of the late Major Clarke of the Indian Army and adopted daughter of Colonel and Mrs Laird of Forfarshire. In 1911, young James was a 42-year-old surgeon, living at 49 Berners Street, Ipswich with his three children, Beatrice 13, Ian 12 and Phlip 7. A major in the R.A.M.C. during the First World War and then commanded a Relief Fund Hospital in Serbia and in 1918 appointed a Knight of Grace of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England. A local doctor at the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital, and was a member of Ipswich Borough Council 1908-1929 representing St Margaret's Ward, mayor in 1929 and became an alderman in 1930. Hossack exhibited at the Ipswich Art Society in 1935, from 49 Berners Street, Ipswich two oils, 'Springtime' and 'St John Ambulance Officer'. James Francis Clark Hossack was of 62 Tuddenham Road, Ipswich when he died at the Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital, Ipswich on 10 May 1937. In 1939 his wife and daughter Beatrice were still living at this address, but Marie Therese Hossack died at 55 Tuddenham Road, Ipswich on 15 March 1947.
