JODE, Bertha Helen Lovelace

Bertha Helen Lovelace Jode was born at Verulam Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire on 21 November 1894, seventh child of William Lovelace Jode (31 August 1852-20 May 1931), a stationer's traveller, and his wife Kate Emily née Jeary (1855-9 May 1935), who was born in Norwich and where they married on 29 August 1881, the family are sometimes noted as Lovelace-Jode. In 1891, the family were living at Verulam Road, St Albans, 38-year-old William and 36-year-old Kate, with five of their children, Kathleen (1882-1959), Albert William (1882-1897), Gordon Robert (1885-1944), Stella Lucy [Hazelwood] (1887-1946) and Hilda Alice [Munson] (1889-1973). By 1892 they had moved to Norfolk and in 1901 were living at School Road, Drayton, Norwich with the addition of Mabel Amy (19 September 1891-1889) and Bertha Helen. By 1911 Bertha's father had departed and her mother Kate was head of the family living at 5 Angel Road, Norwich with children Gordon, Stella, Mabel, and Bertha but in 1921 were living at 25 Avondale Road, Gorleston, Norfolk when Bertha, was now a hairdresser. In 1937, Bertha exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 3 Victoria Road, Gorleston-on-sea, Norfolk, one picture 'Roses'. In 1939, she was living at 26 Bernard Avenue, Gorleston with her sister Kathleen Lovelace, in partnership with her sister at 'The House of Lovelace' on Victoria Road, Gorleston as women's hairdressers. Bertha Helen Lovelace Jode died at 42 Buxton Avenue, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 23 August 1978, she was unmarried.
