WAKE-WALKER, Penelope
Penelope Hughes Wake-Walker was born at Marylebone, London on 12 September 1917, eldest child of [Sir] William Frederic Wake-Walker (24 March 1888–24 September 1945), later an Admiral in the Royal Navy, and his wife Muriel Elsie Hughes (14 August 1890-28 November 1963), only daughter of Sir Alfred Collingwood Hughes, 10th Bt., who married at St Paul's, Knightsbridge, London on 19 January 1916. In 1933, Penelope was a 15-year-old student, living at 26 Holbush Road, Putney, London S.W. 15 when she sailed on the 'Patricia' for a visit to Canada and, again with siblings Christopher (1920-1998), Catherine Marigold [Wake] (1921-1992) and Cedric Collingwood (1923-2013), the following year on the 'Pennland', at that time they were all students at Belstead School, Aldeburgh, Suffolk. As Miss Penelope Wake-Walker she exhibited at the Ipswich Art Society, from East Bergholt Lodge, Suffolk in 1937, an oil 'Autumn Flowers'. Penelope married at East Bergholt, Suffolk in 1937, [Sir] Geoffrey Cecil Ryves Eley (18 July 1904-17 May 1990), of East Bergholt Place, who was knighted on 22 July 1964, a temporary civil servant in 1939, and was chairman of Richard Thomas & Baldwins Ltd 1959-1964. In 1939, her husband was working in London, whilst Penelope was living at East Bergholt Lodge with her widowed mother Muriel, with two, of their four, children and they retained six indoor servants. Lady Penelope Eley died at East Bergholt on 26 August 2003, and buried in East Bergholt Churchyard, she had four children, two sons and two daughters.
