Richard William Taylor was born in Suffolk in 1946, youngest of the three children of William Taylor, an account manager who, being involved in radio construction, in 1922 built the first radio to be heard in his street in Stowmarket, Suffolk, Richard's mother was Muriel née Stott (born 15 March 1908), a professional tailor, who married at Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1940. Richard was educated at Sir John Leman Grammar School, Beccles, Colchester Institute and Trent Park College, Middlesex. He began a career in education, as a teacher of violin in Newham College, London and, after Newham, spent some 25 years in teaching design, technology, and art in Suffolk at both Copleston School, Ipswich and Leiston High School. Over the years, Richard has constructed some fifty musical instruments, mostly of the harpsichord family, having instruments selected by the Crafts Council for exhibition in London also instruments used at the Aldeburgh Festival and in Norwich, Portugal, Vancouver, Pensacola, and Australia. He has exhibited in East Anglia at Norwich Assembly Rooms; Halesworth Gallery; Aldeburgh Gallery and at Walberswick, Bungay and elsewhere. He has his studio at Tunstall, Woodbridge, Suffolk.
