William Robertson was born in Fife Shire, Scotland in 1938, the eldest son of a Scottish ploughman, spending his childhood and early youth in the farming community. Educated at the Madras College, St Andrews in Fife and after working in a papermaking factory for two years, in 1956 he enlisted in the Radio Electrical Branch of the Royal Navy. He left the Naval Service in 1965 and took a position as a Test Equipment Design Technician in the television manufacturing company Pye of Lowestoft, Suffolk. In 1982 he founded his own electronic engineering company, Argus Electronics, from where he retired in 2016. Living in Lowestoft since 1965, he married in 1962, a Lowestoft girl Jill D. Winter and they had three sons, Malcolm David, Kenneth Patrick and Stuart James. A self-taught artist, painting in oils, but has worked in other mediums and in arts such as pyrography, woodcarving, incorporating artwork based on illuminated panels, creating stained glass and plastics. His earliest remembered work, at the age of ten, depicted a Clydesdale plough-horse in full show harness, and is a subject to which he sometimes returns but over the years has produced varied pieces, including two oil paintings based on early, circa 1910, photographs of Lowestoft 'worthies' taken by local photographer Harry Jenkins (1866-1952). William's painting 'Ned Ellis and Children' which was painted from a Jenkins photograph, is one of two donated by William and are on display at the Lowestoft and East Suffolk Maritime Museum.
