STOW, Stephanie

1958 - 2017

As Stephanie Jayne Bird, she was born at Gipping, Suffolk in 1958, her mother's maiden name was Gooderham. Stephanie married at Colchester, Essex in 1982, Michael Stow, and painted under the name of Stephanie Stow. Stephanie studied at the University of Hertfordshire and University College Suffolk, graduating with a B.A. (hons) degree in Art and Design. Coming from rural Suffolk, Stephanie was always aware of nature, which had an influence on her work which can be found within the shapes and patterns. Her work is not about pure representation of an object, but her own vision of the object, she sees plants, flowers and trees as colour and line, rather than detail in the form of leaves or petals. The way in which Stephanie applied the paint, the thickness, or the thinness of the stroke, contributed to how she expressed emotion about a given subject. She loved scraping in and scraping off the paint, playing with lines and texture. Stephanie exhibited at Foss Fine Art, Battersea, London; Bircham Gallery, Holt, Norfolk; VK Gallery, St Ives, Cambridgeshire; Robert Fogell Gallery, Cambridge; Hayletts Gallery, Maldon, Essex; Turner Barnes Gallery, Shenfield, Essex; Candida Stevens Fine Art, Chichester, West Sussex; Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe; Josephine Harpur Gallery, Cambridge and in Suffolk at the Edmund Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Folkes-Miller Fine Art, Long Melford; John Stevens Fine Art, Hadleigh and elsewhere. Her work is held in private collections in Australia and USA. Stephanie Stow lived at D’Arcy Road, Colchester, Essex and died at Colchester General Hospital on 21 February 2017, aged 59.
