PYETT, Claude Arthur
Claude Arthur Pyett was born at Christchurch, New Zealand in 1876, son of Thomas Pyett (1840-February 1879) of Christchurch, New Zealand, and his wife Anne Borrett (1840-2 May 1911), youngest daughter of John Borrett of Yoxford, who married at St Peter's Church, Yoxford, Suffolk on 6 August 1867. The family returned from New Zealand to Yoxford in 1878 but Claude's father Thomas died the following year. In 1881, Claude was a 5-year-old, living at Barons Buildings, 1 St George's Street, Ipswich with his 42-year-old widowed mother Annie, a grocer, with siblings Caroline Amelia 11 and Ernest Edward 9 both born at Christchurch, New Zealand and Ida 7, born at Canterbury, New Zealand, an elder daughter Grace Caroline (1868-1869) was born and died in New Zealand. In 1892 the family were living at 28 Waterloo Road, Ipswich when Claude was a member of the All-Saints' Church, Ipswich choir and in 1902 contributed to the 'Entomologist' an article 'Notes on Suffolk Lepidoptera'. He studied at Ipswich School of Art passing examinations in 1898 and in February 1900, won first prize in the 'Drawing in Outline from the Cast' class and took his master's certificate. A journalist on the 'Suffolk Chronicle' before transferring to the 'Ipswich Journal' and in 1902 he left Ipswich for Norwich, taking a position on the 'Eastern Morning Gazette' and during his journalistic career contributed a considerable number of sketches for the newspapers. Owing to ill-health he returned to Ipswich and, following an attack of typhoid, Claude Arthur Pyett, journalist, died at Ipswich on 2 October 1903, aged 27, he was unmarried and left his estate to his mother.
