NURSEY, Poussin Hassard

1802 - 1880

Was born at The Grove, Little Bealings, on the 11 and baptised at All Saints' Little Bealings church on 14 February 1802, third son of Perry Nursey (1771-1840) and his wife Anne (née Simpson 1766-1844). As Poussin Hassard Nursey, he married at Great Bealings, Suffolk on 5 February 1828, Catherine Head, second daughter of Revd Philip Meadows, rector of Great Bealings and, after period spent at Seckford Hall, Woodbridge with her parents, by 1841 they had moved to Jersey, Channel Islands, where he originally was a land agent. In 1851 a 49 year old schoolmaster living at Vallet House, St Martin's, Jersey with his 41 year old wife Catherine and their three sons, Edward 21, a sailor, Philip 15, both born in England and George S. 5, born at Jersey and in 1871 head of St Matthews School, St Aubins, Jersey. Noted in Life and Letters of Edward FitzGerald ‘Claude and the two Poussins are the great ideal painters of landscape.’ His wife died at Guernsey on 22 April 1880 and as Poussin Hassard Nursey he died at St Peter Port, Guernsey, C.I. the following day 23 April 1880, aged 78, and his will was proved by his son George Sydney Nursey pm 17 September 1882 his estate was valued on £1,998.
