WELCH, Alice Emma
Alice Emma Welch was born at 45 Devonshire Road, St Marys, Islington, London in 1858, daughter of Alfred Welch (1830-8 December 1893), a tailor & outfitter, and his wife Emma Clarke (1830-1929), daughter of John Clarke of Ipswich, who married at St Matthew's Church, Ipswich on 28 December 1854. In 1881, Alice was a 23-year-old, living at 16 Queen Street, Colchester, Essex with her parents, 51-year-old Alfred and 50-year-old Emma, with siblings Arthur 25, Ellen Ada 21, Frederick William 19, Edith Laura 13, all born in the London area and Ethel Mary 5, born at Colchester. Alice exhibited at the Bury St Edmunds Fine Art Society held at the Town Hall, Bury St Edmund's in 1886, a highly commended still life 'Pheasants and Partridges' and as Miss A. Welsh[sic] of Colchester, at the Woodbridge Industrial Art Exhibition at the Lecture Hall, Woodbridge, two highly commended oil paintings. By 1901, a 42-year-old boarding house keeper, at Heath Cole, Holdenhurst Road, Bournemouth, Hampshire where she was living with her widowed mother. Alice Emma Welch was still living at Bournemouth in 1931 but died back in Essex in 1936, she was unmarried.
