BLYTH, Alan

1899 - 1956

Alan Aylmer Wilfred Blyth was born at Nowshera, Bengal, India on 14 August 1899 and baptised at Nowshera on 8 November 1899, second son of Col. Frederick Augustus Blyth (20 November 1857-26 February 1919) of the Indian Army, and his wife Margaret née Tulloch (c1863-11 February 1936). In 1901, his 37-year-old mother was living at 12 Jevington Gardens, Eastbourne with her two sons Alick Frederick (25 October 1896-23 August 1917) and Alan 1, his brother as Lieut. Alick Blyth was killed in action at Ypres, Flanders and Alan served with the Young Men's Christian Association in the later part of the war. In 1911, 11-year-old Alan was living at Silverdale, St Leonard's Road, Eastbourne with his parents, 53-year-old Frederick, who was born in Victoria, Australia, 47-year-old Margaret, who was born at St Helena and their two servants. Alan was educated at Charterhouse and studied at the Royal Academy Schools 1923-1928 under George Clausen, Charles Sims (1873-1928) and Ernest Jackson (1872-1945). In 1928 he became assistant art master at Harrow School, and he married at Farnborough St Peter on 6 July 1930, Elsie North Anderson (30 December 1891-9 April 1985), daughter of Francis Charles Anderson (22 January 1850-8 May 1939) of the Indian Army and in 1939 Alan was living at Jacques, Garboldisham, Diss, Norfolk with his wife and servants. He exhibited at the Royal Academy also exhibiting at many London galleries including the New English Art Club, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Walker's Gallery, London. In 1952 he exhibited from Shelford House, Preston in Suffolk in the exhibition 'Painting of East Anglia' at the Phoenix Art Gallery, Lavenham, Suffolk 'Field Work', 'Colchester Castle' and 'Bawdsey'. Alan Aylmer Wilfred Blyth died at Pine Tree Cottage, Exeter Road, Ottery St Mary, Devon on 4 February 1956 and a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Phoenix Gallery, Lavenham in 1957.
