AUMONIER, James

1832 - 1911

James Aumonier was born at Camberwell, Surrey on 9 April 1832, son of Henry Collingwood Aumonier (1799-1848), a jeweller, and his wife, Nancy Frances (1808-23 May 1856), née Stacy, who married at St Dunstan's in the West, London on 6 June 1827. James studied at evening classes at the Birkbeck Institution followed by Marlborough House and then at South Kensington School of Art. In 1851, James was a 19-year-old paper stainer, living at Clifton Cottage, Willesden, Hendon, Middlesex, the home of his uncle William Stacy, a jeweller, and where his widowed mother and siblings were also living. Around 1862 he turned to painting and became an associate of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours from 1876 and was one of the original members of the Institute of Oil Painters. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy 1870-1911 and was a regular visitor to Southwold, Suffolk painting the local scenery including 'Easton Broads' and 'South Cove Common, Suffolk'. Aumonier married at St George's, Bloomsbury on 8 August 1863, Amelia Wright (1839-23 December 1899), daughter of James Wright, a gold beater, and they had two sons and three daughters, one of whom died at birth in 1878. In 1891, they were living at Oxford Villas, Southdown Road, New Shoreham, Steyning, Sussex. James Aumonier was of 142 Adelaide Road, South Hampstead when he died at 97 South Hill Park, Hampstead, London on 4 October 1911.
