Gilbert Pownall

Gilbert Anthony Pownall was born at 33 Montague Square, Marylebone, London on 17 January 1877, one of the six sons and three daughters of Frederick Hyde Pownall (22 August 1831-21 February 1907), an architect also an artist, and his first wife Jane Todd (4 August 1830-1 May 1883), eldest daughter of John Edward Todd, who married at St James's Church, Westbourne Terrace, Kensington on 27 November 1856, after Jane's death in 1883, Frederick married secondly in 1886, 19 year old Emily Mary Gambier Wainright (1866-1953), and had a further son and two daughters, Emily married again on 20 October 1909, John Henry Behan. In 1901 the Pownall's were living at Cross Deep, Twickenham, Surrey and in 1909 Gilbert married at Chelsea, 24-year-old Kate [Katherine] Deacon (5 December 1885-16 August 1964) and they came to live at Burstall near Ipswich. In 1911, a 34-year-old 'artist', living at Burstall with his 27-year-old wife Kate but by 1921 were living at 1 Grittleton Avenue, Wembley, Middlesex. A portrait and figure painter who exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, and the Royal Academy between 1908 and 1938 from Twickenham, Middlesex in 1903 from Burstall, Suffolk 1911 and from London 1919. In 1939, an artist, living at 2 Nylands Avenue, Richmond Surrey with his wife Katherine and daughter Mary Catherine [Dickson] (25 August 1912-31 October 1994), a milliner. Gilbert Anthony Pownall died at 2 Kew Gardens Road, Kew, Surrey on 20 October 1960, aged 84.
