PRINCE, Louis Stanley Maurice

1894 - 1985

Louis Stanley Maurice Prince was born at Factory Lane, Halstead, Essex on 26 September 1894, youngest of the two sons of the three children of George Edwin Prince (27 November 1863-11 January 1947), assistant manager in Courtauld's Silk Works, and his first wife Elizabeth née Rollison (1863-1932), who married at Macclesfield, Cheshire in 1886. In 1911, Louis was a 16-year-old scholar, living at 94 Platt Street, Leigh, Lancashire with his parents, 47-year-old George and 47-year-old Elizabeth, with two siblings, Alice 23 and Albert Edward 21 who were both born at Macclesfield; at the time of Louis's birth his father had worked at Courtauld's silk words at Halstead for several years before returning to Macclesfield. Louis studied at Manchester School of Art and after teaching art in London, became head of Colchester School of Art in 1926 and in 1929 began his 18 years as head of Woolwich School of Art and after the Second World War a member of the Art Inspectorate for London. A watercolour landscape painter, an Associate of the Royal College of Art and exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery; the New English Art Club and the Royal Academy 1923-1940 from Leigh, Lancashire in 1923, London 1926 and 1930, Stanway, Colchester 1928 and Sudbury, Suffolk in 1935 but only held his first local exhibition at Sudbury's Quay Theatre in July 1984, when he was aged 90. He married at West Ham, Essex in 1923, Jessie Heyworth Counsell (16 August 1895-2 April 1971), and had two sons, Hugh Counsell (1927-2013) and Mark Prince. In 1939, headmaster of a school of art, living at 105 Loose Road, Maidstone, Kent while his wife, owing to the war, remained at The Furze, Middleton, Suffolk. A skilled calligrapher who penned Sudbury's 'Loyal and Dutiful Address' to the Queen on her Silver Jubilee in 1977. Louis Stanley Maurice Prince lived at The Furze, Middleton, near Sudbury where he died on 29 September 1985.
