REYNOLDS, Jane Rebecca

1841 - 1926

Born at Great Fransham, Norfolk and baptised on 30 October 1841, second daughter of Revd Charles Reynolds (1799-1852), rector of Great Fransham, and his wife Mary, eldest daughter of Revd Edward Swatman, rector of Little Fransham, who married on 22 April 1837. In 1851, a 9 year old living at The Rectory, Great Fransham with her parents, 51 year old Charles and 39 year old Mary, with five siblings, Mary 13, Francis William 8, Henrietta Charlotte 6, Caroline Elizabeth 3 and Margaret 1. Her father died on 4 December 1852 and in 1861, a 19 year old 'independent' living at Portland Street, Kings Lynn, Norfolk with her mother and four of her sibling sisters. By 1871 they had moved to 6 Kensington Gate, Kensington, London where Jane may have had some art training as in 1881 she was back at Kings Lynn, Jane a 40 year old 'amateur artist' living at Nelson Street, the home of her cousin, 60 year old Francis Swatman, harbour master, and his wife and daughter. The family probably lived at Lowestoft as Jane exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1881 from 1 Royal Terrace, Lowestoft a watercolour ‘Gladioli from Nature’ and exhibited in later years from Lowestoft. In 1891, a 49 year old 'living on own means' at Gordon Road, Lowestoft, with two boarders wealthy widow Sarah Rackham and her daughter Sarah, and kept two servants but by 1901 had moved to 2 Rectory Road, Kirkley, Lowestoft. In 1911 she was on holiday at 31 Grove Road, Bournemouth and died at Kirkley in 1926, aged 84, she was unmarried.
