ROBERTS, Clarinda
Clarinda Roberts was born at Spital Ema Cottage, Clewer, Berkshire and baptised on 6 October 1838, daughter of William Walter Roberts (c1798-1875), a naval captain, and his wife Susan née James (c1818-1871). Together with her sister Rosa Roberts, she studied art under William Robert Earl (1808-1880) at his studio at Shooter's Hill, Plumstead, Kent, during which time her mother moved to 2 Foundry Road Terrace, Thorpe next Norwich, Norfolk where she had three more children born between 1845 and 1851. Her mother was buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 28 January 1871, in the 1871 census Clarinda was 'head of household, on own means' living at Rose Hill House, Ipswich with her three unmarried sisters and her 74-year-old father, who died at Norwich in 1875. A member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1875-1890 and exhibited regularly from 1875 including from Rose Hill House, Ipswich in 1881, three paintings 'Bixley Decoy', 'Friend or Foe, a portrait' and 'Mouth of the Deben', in 1882 watercolours 'Cottage Flower's' and 'Spite Autumn Blaste', in 1883 'A Study'. In 1901 she was still living at Rose Hill House with two of her sisters, Rosa and Frances, and kept four indoor servants. Clarinda Roberts died at Rose Hill House, St Clement's, Ipswich on 4 December 1909, aged 71, and buried in Ipswich Cemetery three days later, she was unmarried.
