Tom Neal

Thomas Alfred Neal was born at Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire on 17 July 1917, son of George William Neal (29 November 1883-29 April 1940), a bank manager, and his wife Beatrice née Orris (31 August 1883-17 January 1963), who married at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1915 and in 1921 were living at Barclays Bank House, Main Street, Crumlin, Monmouthshire with three children Thomas Alfred 4, Edward Potter 1 and newly born Mary, all born in Wales. In 1923 they returned from Wales to Great Yarmouth and in 1939 were living at 49 Wellesley Road, Great Yarmouth. Tom was educated at Priory School and Great Yarmouth Grammar School where he was the school champion in swimming, an interest he held until his death. In 1939, Tom was a bank clerk, living at St Johns Road, Stalham, Norfolk, the home of grocer John Gray and his wife. He served in the army during the second world war and married in April 1941 Margaret Eileen Neal (25 April 1918-2003). A bank manager at Gorleston in 1946 followed by the Lowestoft branch 1951-1964 then at Bungay. In 1961 he took up painting and was an artist of landscapes and seascapes winning the Roland Fisher Memorial Award at the Yarmouth Art Society for his maritime painting. He had his first exhibition at Bungay in 1971 followed at the Assembly House, Norwich also showing at Beccles and Lowestoft. Thomas Alfred Neal lived at 20 Marlborough Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, and he died at Lowestoft on 22 July 2006.
