RODWELL, Gertrude Hunter
Gertrude Hunter Rodwell was born at 11 York Street, Portman Square, London in 1848 and baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Great Baddow, Essex on 16 August 1848, daughter of Benjamin Bridges Hunter Rodwell (1815-6 February 1892), barrister-at-law and banker, and his wife Mary Packer née Boggis (1821-25 January 1914), daughter of James Boggis of Baddow Court, who married at Great Baddow Church, Essex on 27 August 1844. The Hunter Rodwell family lived at Ampton Hall, Suffolk but about 1885 Ampton Hall was destroyed by fire when the Rodwell's moved to Woodlands, Church Lane, Holbrook, near Ipswich, Ampton Hall was later rebuilt. A Miss Rodwell was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1875-1876 and a Miss G. Hunter Rodwell exhibited in 1883 from Holbrook three pictures, an oil ‘Hall at Ampton’ (240) and two watercolours also both entitled ‘Hall at Ampton’ (425 & 441). A Miss Rodwell also exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1881, an interior of Ampton Hall. Gertrude Hunter Rodwell was of Windyridge, Holbrook when she died in London on 9 May 1937 and buried at Holbrook, she was unmarried.
Note:
1. the member of Ipswich Art Club 1875-1876 was a Miss Rodwell but the exhibitor in 1883 is Miss G. Rodwell of Holbrook. Gertrude had an elder sister Sophia Catherine Hunter Rodwell, born at Marylebone, London on 7 March 1847 and lived with her sister until Sophia's death at Holbrook on 15 June 1928, she was also unmarried. The 1875-1876 member could have been Sophia.
