Lesley Pyke was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia, now Harare, Zimbabwe, in April 1962. Leaving school in 1979 with qualifications including an 'A' level in Art, this was followed by a short course in painting at Harare School of Art. A self-taught artist taking up glass engraving in 1983 and, as an overseas member, joining the Guild of Glass Engravers and in 1984 she opened her own engraving business in Harare, Zimbabwe using techniques such as drilling, sandblasting, and etching. During her glass engraving years in Zimbabwe, where she was the only professional glass engraver, any business transactions were extremely difficult from that country, but she was able to exhibit one piece at the Guild exhibitions. However, in December 2001 Lesley moved to Suffolk where she continued her successful glass engraving business with a showroom, gallery, and workshop in the Halesworth Industrial Centre and in 2018 at Henstead Arts and Crafts Centre, Toad Row, Henstead, Beccles. She has served on the Council of the Guild of Glass Engravers and has exhibited at the Guild of Glass Engravers; Morley College Gallery, London; Engraving events for Bombay Sapphire in Selfridges Birmingham and in London; Engraving for Givenchy at Harrods; Contemporary Glass Gallery, London and locally at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold; Craftco, Southwold; Cambridge Glass Fair and elsewhere. Lesley had taught glass engraving since 1995 and now teaches from her Henstead Craft Centre. Her market is high-end luxury gifts presentations and awards, with a good proportion of clients being the public requiring simple engraving but with clients from all over the world including large corporations, celebrities, European Royalty, an African Head of State. Mrs. Suzanne Lesley King still uses her professional name of Lesley Pyke.
