Jonathan Peter Gibbs studied at Lowestoft School of Arts and Crafts 1971-1972, the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London 1972-1976, for his B.A. (hons) in Painting, and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL 1976-1978 for his Higher Diploma in Fine Art. Jonathan Gibbs took the Cheltenham Painting Fellowship in 1978 and has been an art college lecturer since that time. Gibbs’ work encapsulates book illustration, drawing & painting, printmaking, editorial & pattern design. His work has been published in a variety of books, magazines, and printed artefacts as well as in digital formats and web design. He works in oil on wood panels primed with gesso and makes some of his woodblocks for engraving using Holly, Box and Whitebeam. Gibbs has illustrated 'The Collected Poems of Robert Frost' for the Folio Society, London, and has made additional book designs and illustrations for Faber & Faber, Penguin, Picador and Random House. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Society of Wood Engravers, Curwen Gallery, Open Eye Gallery, Rowley Gallery, in London and in Edinburgh and elsewhere. A lecturer in the University of Edinburgh from 1990. The UK Government Art Collection have purchased his works as have the Arts Council of Great Britain; the Scottish Arts Council, Leicestershire, Suffolk, Loudoun and Kilmarnock Councils; and private collections in the UK, USA, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
