Paul Bullard

Paul James Bullard was born at Islington, London on 2 February 1918, son of Arnold Robert Bullard (2 May 1886-1964), a hairdresser, and his wife Olive Maud née Hunt (1886-22 May 1964), who married at Gorleston, sometime in Suffolk but now Norfolk, in 1911. Paul studied at Clapham School of Art, 1934–1938 and the Royal College of Art, 1938–1940, he then saw service in the Royal Artillery before resuming his studies 1946-1947, his tutors included Roland Vivian Pitchforth (1895-1982) and [Cyril] Charles Mahoney (1903-1968). He married in 1944 Jeanne Ashton Fenner (7 October 1920-4 August 2008), whom he met at the Royal College of Art, and they had two sons Alan and Richard. Bullard taught at various London art schools 1947–1958 and became lecturer and later head of the department of foundation studies at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts 1958–1978 when he retired, living at Stanstead in Suffolk. In his later career he painted many water-colours and delicately crafted plant drawings while continuing to paint in oils. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1948; Phoenix Art Gallery, Lavenham; New English Art Club; London Group of Artists; Belgrave Gallery and elsewhere, his final exhibition was at the Louis C Morton Gallery in Mexico in 1992 and he undertook several commissioned portraits. Collections holding his work include The Imperial War Museum, The Football Association and Shropshire Education Committee. He wrote an illustrated memoir about his escape from a prison camp in Northern Italy, and in 1946 painted a picture of the prison camp, which is now in the Imperial War Museum, London. In 1995 Paul James Bullard moved to Colchester, Essex and died in St Helena Hospice, Colchester in 1996.
