HUTTON, Warwick

1939 - 1994

Warwick Blair Hutton was one of twins, with Macaillan John Hutton, born at St Pancras, London on 17 July 1939, of the three children of John Hutton and his wife [[Helen [Nell] Blair,5516]], who were both successful New Zealand artists and married in New Zealand in 1934, coming to London in 1936, but divorced in 1960. In late 1939 Warwick was living with his parents and twin brother at Assington Hall, Further Street, Great Waldingfield, Suffolk. Warwick was an artist, glass engraver and illustrator widely known for pen and ink and watercolor illustrations for children’s books. Warwick attended the Colchester School of Art when John Scorror O'Connor was the principle and John Nash was teaching botanical drawing. There Hutton met Elizabeth Mills and they were married at Chelsea, London in 1965. Warwick was working as an illustrator while helping his father engrave and install the windows for Coventry Cathedral. He worked for small private presses and major publishers, from the The Keepsake Press to the Cambridge University Press and their limited-edition Christmas Book series, 'Waterways of the Fens' and 'A Printer’s Christmas Books'. Warwick was head of Fine Art at the Cambridge School of Art and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from Hillside House, Nayland, Suffolk in 1962 and illustrated his mother's 'Practical Gemstones' (1972) and 'Mosaic Making Techniques' (1977) and many others including his own works and those of Susan Cooper. Warwick Blair Hutton died of cancer at 52 Warkworth Terrace, Cambridge on 28 September 1994.
