ARCHER, Magda

Magda Elisabeth Archer was born at Greenwich, London on 29 June 1964, daughter of Eric Leonard Archer and his wife Doreen Elizabeth née Horwood, who married at Ilford, Essex in 1958. Magda studied at the Ipswich School of Art and then moved to London and studied at Ravensbourne School of Art 1982-1983, Chelsea School of Art 1983-1986, and the Royal College of Art 1986-1988. Magda became a member of the city's vibrant art scene, working as a commercial artist and began exhibiting her own work in galleries and art fairs. She married at Wandsworth in 1996 Matthew Keith Hall (Harry Hill) (1 October 1956-) but continues to work as Magda Archer. Her work is known for its bold, cartoonish style and often features humorous and ironic content and she has worked in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Her work often incorporates text and cultural references and she has frequently explored themes related to advertising, consumer culture, and popular culture. In addition to her art practice, Archer has also worked in the fields of commercial art and design. She has created illustrations for magazines, advertising campaigns, and television shows. She has designed album covers for musicians including the British band Franz Ferdinand. Archer's work is often described as having a humorous and irreverent tone, sometimes the surreal. Despite living and working in London, Archer has maintained a connection to Suffolk throughout her career and has exhibited her work in galleries throughout the region, including the Aldeburgh Beach Lookout and the Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries. She has also created public artworks in Suffolk, including a mural in the town of Saxmundham. Archer has said that her time at the Ipswich School of Art played a crucial role in her development as an artist, and she has remained involved in the school as an alumna and has also worked as a visiting lecturer and tutor at the school. She has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including at the Royal Academy; the Saatchi Gallery; the Tate Modern, and the De La Warr Pavilion; Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff; Gallery at Boston University, USA and elsewhere. In 2019, she had a solo exhibition at Nottingham Contemporary, which featured her large-scale paintings and sculptures.
