ROTH, George

c.1739 - 1821

George Roth was born around 1739, son of George Roth, who was the artist employed by Allan Ramsay in painting draperies and who also possibly worked for Lawrence and Reynolds, and his wife Mary, known as George Roth, junior. Information on George, jun. is slight but is known to have worked both in London and Bath and exhibited at The Society of Arts 1771-1776. Portraits by George Roth of sitters from Ipswich are known including both the Beckwith and Webster families of Suffolk, which point to an East Anglian connection for the Roth family. Another portrait, by a William Roth who was undoubtedly related, exists with the address of No 9 London Lane, Norwich. There are several other artists with the same surname who are presumed to be related including a John Roth of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk who painted a portrait of Mrs Shalders which was exhibited at the Norwich Society of Artists in 1821. Another set of portraits have inscribed on the reverse of each portrait in a contemporary hand: 1] G Roth. Wm Healey aged 59 1793, 2] G Roth. Sarah Healey aged 51 1793, 3] G Roth. Mr Lowe Ranby aged 29 1793 and 4] G Roth. Ann Ranby aged 29 1793. The family group consists of mother, father, daughter, and son-in-law. All the sitters come from the village of Pinchbeck near Spalding in Lincolnshire. William Healey (1734-1808) his wife Sarah Burks (1741-1805) their twelve children included Ann (1764-1803) who married in 1785 Lowe Ranby (1760-1854). George Roth, jun. was buried at St Anne, Westminster on 1 May 1821, aged 82. Henry Rider Haggard was the owner of two of his works and when exhibited it was stated that they 'were from Woodbridge [Suffolk]'.
