QUAIL, Paul Reginald
Paul Reginald Quail was born at Langley, Buckinghamshire in 1928, son of Reginald Thomas Lionel Quail (6 February 1896-29 January 1958) an advertising consultant, and his wife Edith Grace née Tunstill (13 March 1895-25 August 1961), who married at Greenwich in 1923. In 1939 they were living at Old Manor House, Flatford, East Bergholt, Suffolk and Paul went boating and fishing on the river Stour with his brothers and worked with local farmers. Educated at Blackfriars school in Laxton, Northamptonshire and served in the Royal Tank Regiment during the second world war. He studied art and design at the Chelsea School of Art and received his art teacher's certificate from Brighton College of Art. Apprenticed to the stained-glass studios of Lowndes and Drury, Francis Spear and Eddie Nuttgens. In 1973 Paul was elected a fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters and was also a member of Christian Arts and the Society of Catholic Artists. He married firstly at Kensington, London in 1958 Anne-Carole née Leplat and they had four children Justin, Ben, Frances and Louisa, and secondly at Westminster, London in 1981 Frederica J Elphick. Paul taught the art of stained glass at Flatford Mill and at West Dean College in Chichester and Frederica and Paul set up a studio in the stable of a 15th-century farmhouse in Gunthorpe, Norfolk. In 1990 Paul was commissioned by BP and African Petroleum to make three windows for a gothic-style church on an island in Rivers state, Nigeria when Paul and Frederica spent a week in Nigeria installing the windows. Paul Reginald Quail died on 31 July 2010.
